In this lovely little park in Vangsnes with its magnificent view over the Sognefjord, stands the 26 m high statue of the Norwegian saga hero and Viking Fridtjov the Bold. The saga was most likely written down in Iceland in the 14th century.

Vikøyri – the historical shore dweller site

Vikøyri is the name of a densely built area by the fjord with characteristic tiny wooden houses. The first settlers were impecunious farm labourers or maidservants who leased small plots of land, keeping a few sheep in the cellar and fishing in the fjord.
Hopperstad Stave Church

Hopperstad Stave Church

Hopperstad stave church, built 1130, is among the oldest of all the 28 remaining stave churches in Norway. Technology from the building of Viking ships was used in the advanced 100% wooden constructions. All vital parts are original, close to 900 years old. Hopperstad is the only stave church where the original narrow chancel opening is preserved.
Hove Stone Church

Hove Stone Church

Hove Church was built around 1170 as a private chapel, most likely by a man of considerable wealth and power. This small, yet monumental building has a wonderful setting, surrounded by green meadows and farmland.
